Education

Suicide is one of the leading causes of death ages 10-25, world-wide. In addition, most of the people who have committed suicide, have suffered from a mental illness.

To make the change and save lives, we need to raise the level of mental health awareness in our society through education.

Here are some of the education programs we are offering to schools, colleges, companies, and institutions.

This is a 2-hour training that introduces us to the reality and importance of our mental health, as well as how to take care of our mental health, so we can live productive and fulfilling lives.

This is a 2-hour training that introduces us to common mental health conditions (stress, anxiety and depression), how to recognize them and accessing help for these conditions.

This is a 2-hour training that creates awareness on suicide and the truth that suicide can be prevented, through practical steps.

This is a 2-hour training that strengthens our communication with the people around us, focusing on listening and conflict management.

Our Education Programs

Our key training program is our  Suicide Prevention Gatekeeper Training.

We also offer other trainings such as:

  • Introduction to Mental Health
  • Resiliency Building
  • Communication Skills and Conflict Resolution
  • Bullying and Sexual Harrassment Awareness
  • Stress, Anxiety, and Depression
  • Self-harm

*The duration for each training session is 3 hours.

Stay Safe Before a Crisis

Did you know that our resiliency can be build?

The way we cope can also be very different from others and that is okay.

Here's How to Stay Safe
Before a Crisis:

Suicide Warning Signs

When someone is thinking about suicide, their words and actions
can give you clues that they are at risk of hurting themselves.

The following can be common suicide warning signs:

  • Having no reason/s to live
  • Feeling hopeless/ worthless/ trapped
  • Think they are a burden to others
  • Say that people in their life will be better without them
  • Communicate unbearable pain
  • Saying goodbye
  • Increased use of alcohol or drugs
  • Act recklessly/ aggressively
  • Withdrawing from activities
  • Isolating from family or friends
  • Sleeping too much or too little
  • Losing interest in personal appearance or hygiene
  • Giving away prized possessions
  • Looking for a way/s to end their lives
  • Depression
  • Anxiety
  • Loss of interest
  • Easily irritated
  • Frequent mood swings
  • Shame/ Humiliation
  • Sudden sense of calmness without any clear and meaningful reason

You might not always be able to spot these signs, and these show up differently for everyone.

If you notice any of these warning signs in a friend, or loved one,
encourage them to talk about how they are feeling and seek professional help.

How to talk to someone who is suicidal?

Having the conversation when you notice changes in your loved ones can be scary,
but by approaching the person, you can support them to get help if needed.

  • Have resources you can share with them for support and help them to find HOPE.
  • Share your observations with them.
  • Encourage them to express how they feel.
  • Listen to what they would like to share and always clarify rather than assume.
  • Encourage them to seek professional help if they still feel suicidal after the conversation.
  • Follow-up even after the conversation.
  • Check out our social media posts too as they are updated with basic mental health tips that we hope can be beneficial for you.

However, if the person is in immediate crisis, DO NOT leave the person alone.

Click below to find out more on what to do next:

Stay Safe in a Crisis

  • Remove anything harmful.
  • Practise a coping skill that helps (Avoid consuming alcohol).
  • Ask someone to be with, or check in on me.
  • Go somewhere I feel safe/ with people.
  • Utilise the Crisis Hotlines.
  • Go to the nearest Government Hospital (Emergency department).

If you’re in a crisis, ask yourself:
“What can I do now, that is in my control
to keep myself safe?”

If you’re struggling, focus on:
“What can I do now, that is in my control to get through the next few minutes?”

  • Remind myself that my intense and overwhelming feelings won’t last forever.
  • Observe things that I can see around me.
  • Speak to someone.
  • Listen to my favourite music.
  • Try a relaxation technique.
  • Think of a meaningful memory for every letter of the alphabet.

If you’re feeling overwhelmed right now,
here are some grounding techniques:

1) Inhale through your nose for four seconds.

2) Hold your breath for seven seconds.

3) Exhale through your mouth for eight seconds.

Repeat this for as long as you may need.

Bring your focus to the present using your 5 senses.

Name 5 things you can see

  • Look in your immediate surrounding, or further away.
  • Scan and notice things you’ve not paid attention to before.

Name 4 things you can touch

  • Touch objects near you.
  • For instance, the texture of your clothes and the weight of your bottle/ cup.

Name 3 things you can hear

  • Pay attention to the sounds your mind has usually tuned out, such as the air conditioner or ticking clock.

Name 2 things you can smell

  • Take a moment to pick up scents in the air around you, like food or perfume.

Name 1 thing you can taste

  • What does the inside of your mouth taste like? Gum? Coffee? Nasi Lemak?
  • Focus on your mouth as the last step and take in what you can taste.

You may end this with a long, deep breath.

Suicide Postvention

Grief is never easy, what more losing someone to suicide as it can be painful, complex and confusing. Common feelings include guilt, shame, anger, regret and blame.

We recognize that it is also hard to tell others about the cause of death because of the stigma associated with suicide.

There is no right way to grieve losing a loved one to suicide. If you have experienced loss of a loved one due to suicide, we are saddened to learn about this and would like to support you.

  1. Allow yourself to feel and express your emotions.
    – Attempting to avoid them will only delay and deepen your pain. After all, what you name, you tame.
  2. Take time alone to reflect
    – Spend time alone to think, remember, meditate or pray.
    – Keep a journal to record your thoughts and feelings.
  3. Capture memories of your loved one
    – Make a journal, photo album or memory box with mementoes.
    – Create a memory book to express stories, memories and messages.
    – Rearrange and store the person’s belongings when you are ready to.
  4. Use social media carefully
    – You may want to limit your social media use to closed groups rather than making public postings that can be read and commented on by anyone as your postings may also attract insensitive messages.
  5. Plan coping strategies for the harder times
    – Create a list of people and organisations to contact when the going gets tough.
    – Prioritise daily tasks – do only what is essential.
  6. Look after yourself
    – Eat a healthy diet.
    – Explore coping activities to give you time out from the pain.
    – Take walks/ exercise to boost your energy or to use excess adrenaline.
  7. Expect ups and downs
    – The healing process rarely moves in a straight line. Some days your grief may seem more manageable than others.
  8. Reach out to others
    – Talk to a trusted friend or family member
    – Attend individual counselling or a support group.
  9. Reach out for counselling if you are experiencing any suicidal thoughts and signs.

David Kessler, author and death/grieving expert, said,

“As you deal with acceptance, there is meaning. Their life mattered. Their death mattered. And meaning can be how we mark it. When you’re in a meaningful moment, take time to stop, notice it, and name it…and why it’s meaningful.”

After all, the only way through grief is through grieving.Grief is not a disorder, a disease or a sign of weakness. It is an emotional, physical and spiritual necessity, the price you pay for love.
